I guess the death of Davey Jones earlier today hit me harder than I thought. What started out as a simple review of Flower Power: Strum, Sing, and Pick Along with 30 Groovy Hits! turned into a little tribute to Davey Jones and the Monkees via YouTube, which then turned into a full trip down memory lane with the embedding of great performances from a number of songs in the book, including Day Dream Believer by the Monkees, California Dreamin’ and Monday, Monday by the Mamas and the Papas, A Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harem, White Rabbit by the Jefferson Airplane, San Francisco by Scott MacKenzie, Morning has Broken by Cat Stevens, Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce, Let’s Get Together by the Youngbloods, Daydream by the Lovin’ Spoonful, Happy Together by the Turtles, Mr. Tambourine Man by the Byrds, Joy to the World by Three Dog Night, The 59th Street Bridge Song by Simon and Garfunkel, and What the World Needs Now is Love by Jackie Deshannon. And that’s just a few of them!

Oh, and the book is great, as well: perfect if you’re an advanced beginner or intermediate ukulele player who’d like to add a little pizazz to your playing while reliving the sixties and the songs we grew up loving. Click here to learn more about Flower Power and take your own trip down memory lane. (And you can buy the book there, as well.)
